Missed Chances

This kind of thing makes me wish I still lived in NYC.

Group Think

Two book groups have been suggested in the last few months. Will I have time for either? More importantly, do I have the willpower to say "No"?

Who's Watching?

Our course requests have been tabulated and I've got Cyberlaw with Susan Crawford next semester, in addition to my required courses (Civil Procedure, Contracts, Criminal Law, and Legal Practice). Crawford was recently named one of the heads of Obama's FCC transition team.

I'm excited about Cyberlaw especially since I'm interested in pursuing it as a career, and I'm hoping to find a job related to it for next summer. But unfortunately I'm not as up on the subject as I should be; luckily, a friend at Penguin recently sent me Larry Lessig's new book Remix, which is serving as a bit of a crash course but is also pointing me to a bunch of other reading (Yochai Benkler, Jamie Boyle, etc.). It's serving as a nice distraction from outlining/exam prep, certainly.

There's a good article about Google, freedom of speech, and censorship in tomorrow's NYTimes Magazine, as well.

Second Life

I need another me to: apply for jobs, look for a new apartment (I want to live closer to campus), do all my reading, finish my outlines, study for exams, read for pleasure, and maintain some sort of life. Volunteers?

Infinite Regret

I just read David Foster Wallace's 2005 commencement speech at Kenyon College. Hot damn. Why did we get stuck with McCain for my graduation (who recycled a speech he gave once before and once after) when such brilliant orators walk among us?

This might be enough to make me tackle Infinite Jest again, although my pleasure reading has been supremely compromised by the lack of subway commuting and available time. Must fix that.

Five to Four

There was a panel at school today of six profs talking about important Constitutional cases from the last session of the Supreme Court in honor of Constitution Day. As further proof of my lameness, the panel was interesting enough (on the whole) to make me want to go out and read the opinions. Who wouldn't after hearing about Scalia and Stevens fighting it out in their rulings?

Long Reach

While waiting in line to register today, I saw someone reading the short stories of a well-known writer in an edition that I had to work on (some minor changes) on not six weeks ago. 

First thought: I can't away from my past life!

Second: But at least it's a good conversation starter...

By the buy

One of the things I'm not looking forward to is moving into my new apartment (which I haven't even seen). I'm more wondering if I'll have time to unpack my 80 million boxes. Probably not.

Will I have time to read non-school stuff? I hope so.
